WHO WAS JUNE READY

June was a life member of the NSWBTA and the ABTA, she was an original ‘marching girl’ and feature twirler for the club Blackwatch, which was a club based in Sydney. In the early days twirlers were called Majorettes. Blackwatch was one of the largest and most successful majorette clubs in the 1960’s and 70’s. June led many parades and performances for Blackwatch.

June served both the ABTA and NSWBTA in many administrative roles.

As the sport became very popular in the early 1980’s with hundreds of members, June became a judge. She of course loved the traditional events of Strut and Marchpast but as the sport developed and changed her favourite event was Freestyle. She was always amazed at the talents and capabilities of the freestylist. She would often encourage athletes from a young age, offering words of advice.

June loved the sport.

She passed away is 2003, Sonia Johnson, Initiated the scholarship in the honour of June.

She didn’t have children involved in the sport and she thought it was important that her contribution was recognised, and thought we needed to do a better job of remembering / honouring those people who’s hard work made the sport what it is.
